Power to Live for Christ in 2018

One of the powerful Bible references in our 40-Days Prayer series is Jesus’ statement that depicts our strength and source of sufficiency depending on our rootedness in Him. John 15:4-5 said, “Abide in Me and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing”

Many of us believers in Christ Jesus often fail to accomplish and bear fruit because we tend to depend on our own abilities to live the Christian life. Another reason is that we tend to live to please ourselves in our comfort zone as well as living to please our fellow human beings. Of course, there are other worldly attractions that tend to lure us away from continual focus on Christ, our Savior and Lord. As we begin and continue in the New Year 2018, we must daily seek the grace and wisdom of God to let go of these misgivings and start living our true identity in Christ.

Our new life in Christ has repositioned us as people who live within the framework of life in Him like Apostle Paul said, “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. . . “ (Galatians 2:20).We believers derive our direction, strength and wisdom from Christ, hence the I, me, and mine ought to cease while His sovereign will continually manifest in and through us. That is why Jesus Himself describes our new relationships with Him as that of the vine and the branches, especially if we want to bear fruit resulting in productive life that honors and glorifies God. Everyone of us who believes in Christ has the Holy Spirit of Christ in us who is our comforter, teacher, enabler and advocate. We must continually remember the word of Prophet Zechariah, “Not by (our) might nor power, but by My Spirit” (4:6). I pray that we all abide in Christ who is the vine and we His branches as well as depend on God’s Holy Spirit power to accomplish successfully in 2018!                                                                                                                                                                                             - Dr. Johnson Omon
